The Western Cape, South Africa

Stunning coastlines, beautiful beaches and sensational scenic views are just some of the many reasons why the Western Cape is one of the top holiday destination in the world. Situated on the southernmost tip of Africa, the Western Cape is home to the stunning city of Cape Town, with its world-renowned Table Mountain, its stunning views and its vibrant culture. The city of Cape Town offers an array of luxury hotels and cosy Bed and Breakfasts for visitors to relax in during their stay in this vibrant mother city. Cape Town is also home to the world famous V&A Waterfront, a stunning mall situated in the harbour district. It boasts an array of international fashion labels, local art, stunning jewellery and incredible dining experiences.

Just a stone throw from the heart of Cape Town is the picturesque fishing village of Kalk Bay, this quaint village features co-op stores with beautiful local arts and crafts, small cafes and restaurants with some of freshest sea food available. Just past Kalk Bay is the Cape Point nature reserve, this is where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Indian Ocean, making for a breath taking scenic experience.

Travelling along the East Coast to the sleepy town of Hermanus, travellers can relax and enjoy its unparalleled beauty, whilst watching one of the gentlest of giants of the oceans. Southern Right whales migrate to Hermanus to mate and calve between the months of June and November and it’s an all inspiring sight to see these gentle giants play amongst the waves.

Travelling along the West Coast, travellers can experience the tranquillity of the Langebaan lagoon. Often called the jewel of the West Coast, Langebaan is a Ramsar Convention site and attracts thousands of migratory birds to its wetland and tranquil waters every year, making it a bird lover’s paradise. For those that want to relax and enjoy the sun, Langebaan boasts a large selection of beaches, the West Coast National Park and unique beach restaurants serving up incredible seafood.

Long Street

Long Street, Cape Town

Every major city has its party district and for Cape Town that party district is Long Street. A street that bursts into life when the sun goes down, a street filled with fun, sexual tension and drunken memories. A street that has become a melting pot of cultures since the fall of Apartheid in the early 90s, a street that offers something for everyone, a street where you can be whoever you want to be till the sun rises.

The locals call Cape Town the Mother City, and this street of wonders is at the heart of this magical city.
On weekends this one way street becomes as difficult to navigate as the streets of Delhi during rush hour. But it is not tired workers on their way to or from work, but a sea of taxi cabs and happy party goers looking for a good time. The sidewalks overflowing with people moving from one club or bar to the next, or making their way to one of the many street food stalls or restaurants that run along the whole strip.

Some of these bars and clubs have been on Long Street for as long as I can remember, and every now and again some of the “flash in pan” establishments move or go out of business and are filled by a new bar or club with new concepts, drawing in a new crowd of fun seekers. But the big names just seem to keep on pumping out good time’s week in and week out.

The Dubliner, an Irish themed bar plays hosts to thousands of patrons every week, offering live sports events, live music and cold Guinness on tap. The Purple Turtle, a dirty, yet iconic establishment loved by punk bands and their crazy followers over the years to the trance lovers who loved to melt the night away in the famous purple building. Carnival Court, part backpackers, part bar, loved for its mix of backpackers from around the globe and live music. This is the place to go to for that never ending party feeling. Fiction, a club for those who love electronic music and are fearless enough to stomp on the old wooden floorboards. Tiny, yet action packed, this club has hosted some of the most memorable Drum ‘n Bass parties that I can remember. Other important bars and clubs include, Bob’s Bar and their old patrons, Stones and their seemingly endless sea of pool tables, The Waiting room and their hipster crowd, Zula and their live music events and who could forget Kennedy’s and their Jazz and cigar lounge.

This is a truly magical street for any traveler to visit while they are holidaying in Cape Town, South Africa. Even if they are not the bar and clubbing type, the street offers visitors an array of restaurants that serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Or you can visit one of the many retail stores that litter the street. But the street really comes to life at night and that is how I remember it at its best.
